An Interesting Note

This information was passed along to The Tazer, and we've moved to the main page as quickly as possible...VERY interesting.

The Tazer has also included its response:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are the homicide rates for earlier years (the ones some folks want to ignore):

Year Gun Homicides Total Homicides:

1985 11 (55%) 20
1986 17 (81%) 21
1987 10 (55%) 18
1988 24 (75%) 32
1989 33 (82%) 40
1990 25 (69%) 36
1991 47 (76%) 62
1992 39 (85%) 46
1993 51 (93%) 55
1994 28 (54%) 52

Although it's often convenient to throw out data that doesn't support ones argument, it is misleading. We all have to face the facts, Richmond has seen extreme and often senseless violence for a long time and under the rule of numerous mayors.

TAZER RESPONSE:

Did these numbers make it on to the Tazer in a comment? I’m going to move them to the main page.

People do need to be aware of this trending, and I don’t believe anyone wants to ignore it…

One has to wonder though, does Richmond have an “orgy type nepotism style” when it comes to city officials? How long have Butt, Viramontes, Rogers, Marquez and others been there? Hell, I graduated in 92, and most of those names were either on the council or damn close, f@%!ing up city politics somewhere.

Irma is simply a continuation of that process. Until a fresh group of people who are not in that mix are in place (including the mayor), it will be SOS.

She can’t run from it, nor can anyone else involved…if you are in charge, you’ll be held responsible and in most normal instances, pay with not being re-elected and wear the badge of failure when it comes to public service.

I get an odd twinge when I see the years 91-94, seeing as I ducked my fair share of bullets, watched friends die and watched the old RUSD f!@k up money so badly that our class almost didn’t graduate due to the district going bankrupt.

Finally, in my travels as a consultant, I had the chance to visit the town of Gifford Florida and meet its people. After that experience, I refuse to believe that any city with a large minority population cannot get their city officials to get things done. They’ve ran out drug dealers, poverty pimps and a lot of crime by saying no more and forcing the Vero Beach City Council to own up to past failures while holding them responsible for all actions.

Nice work, socko! My education has led me to look up crime data with the FBI, who only offer UCR's for the years 1996 to 2005. And you...well, you have your own connections, don't you? Well done indeed!

Let it be known that I don't just throw around numbers for fun enroute to a proper discussion. I own up to my deficiency in complete statistics, but now our view is clearer than before. So, to be fair, let's run Rosemary Corbin's numbers. She was mayor from 1993 to 2001. As neither of us could find a 1995, it won't be averaged in...

    1993: 55
    1994: 52
    1995: ?
    1996: 34
    1997: 30
    1998: 18
    1999: 31
    2000: 29
    2001: 18
    TOTAL: 267

My math makes that an average of 35.33 homicides/year, or 38.143 homicides/year if you include the 1993 that overlaps with the previous mayor. Both are higher than what Irma Anderson's managing now: 35.5 or 32, depending on the inclusion of the overlapping 2001. That missing year may or may not change things; only 1995 knows for sure. Rosemary Corbin presided over at least 267 homicides while she was mayor for eight years. Irma Anderson is at 160 and counting in her 3 years and counting. But are you really keeping score, socko?

I don't defend Corbin, or any other past mayor. "anonymous," on the other hand, seems to be shilling for Anderson by passing the buck. You're absolutely right when you say, "Richmond has seen extreme and often senseless violence for a long time and under the rule of numerous mayors," but the fact remains that Irma Anderson is the CURRENT mayor.

I hope I've just proven to you that fresh facts aren't inconvenient to me at all, that I don't intend to mislead, and that I'm perfectly willing to say I didn't have all of the facts in hand. My goal is, and will always be, the general pursuit of truth wherever it occurs.

Thus, just as you want to hold previous mayors responsible for what happened during their tenures, isn't Irma Anderson likewise responsible for what happens during her tenure? Or are 160 homicides "inconvenient"?

Dread Captain & others interested can find there were 27 homicides in 1995 along with other relevant statistics at the following site:
    http://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles/168100.pdf (pgs. 8 & 9).

We need to recognize the history and trends of violence in our community if we are going to to overcome it.

The upward trend of drug & gang related youth violence is intolerable, innocent victims being killed is heartbreaking.

Who taught these children so well?

Who will teach them to place more value on their lives and the lives of others?

The Mayor's office, the RPD, and the WCUSD certainly have a role to play, but what about a parents responsibility to play a role in the life of their children?

History is invaluable. Santayana said all that needs to be said on the matter.

Trends are instructive, but not decisive. They come and go. What needs to be uncovered is cause and effect, or the reasoning behind particular trends. But that's a whole other topic of discussion.

If 1995 had 27 homicides, that brings Corbin's averages to 32.66/year including 1993, or 29.87/year without 1993. In this analysis, 30ish homicides per year (give or take) over the course of a decade isn't unheard of. Not that it makes it right, of course...

There is no monopoly on responsibility and irresponsibility, but when the time comes, folks have to take their weight. Parents: be parents and take charge of your kids. Elected officials: know your role and do what's right because re-election should be the least of your concerns.
