Man shot at Richmond funeral

A 45-year-old man was shot at a Richmond chapel Saturday morning while he attended funeral services for a man who was killed earlier this month, police said.

At around 11:19 a.m. the victim was in the chapel when an unknown man, who was also attending the services, shot him in the face and the arm, said Richmond Lt. Enos Johnson.

The shooter, who was described as a male in his early 20s dressed in a business suit, left the chapel, police said.

The victim, whose name is not being released, was taken to the trauma center at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he is recovering from his injuries, Johnson said.

Officers are still trying to determine the motive for the shooting, Johnson said.

About 250 people were at the funeral services for Sedrick Mills Jr., 25, who was killed on Sept. 11 near Fifth Street and Nevin Avenue, Johnson said.

Police last week arrested his cousin, 25-year-old Demetrius Moore, who was charged with murder.

It's horrific when the families of victims of violence here in Richmond are not safe attending funeral services for slain loved ones.

What will it take to end this madness? How many more lives will be lost? Where & when are any of us safe?

This is a problem all Richmond residents face every day whether we think so or not; young or old, it just doesn't matter.

Clearly, too many lives are being lost when most of our city's OVP resources are spinning their wheels 'planning' their strategy.

Unfortunately, the thugs are mostly one step ahead, calling out in muffled voices 'roller' as the RPD sweeps the area.

And as well the citizens and residents of Richmond, KNOW there is NO hope until the City Of Richmond intends to WIN the "WAR ON VIOLENCE'.

The killing fields of Richmond California, are no different from the killing fields of Beriut, Baghdad, Kabul, Londonderry or Belfast!

We must start to percive we are at WAR with DOMESTIC TERRORISTS in our own city of Richmond. These are well-armed killers, who have real street experience in semi-combat in an urban setting. They are no different than the HEZBALLAH on the frontlines of South Lebanon!

We need to understand we are at WAR regardless of the fact that we do not want to admit it!

This is simply madness. Firepower and violence in a funeral chapel. My God, where does this end! We need to have martila law declared now.

Why do they not start placing magno-meters at the entry ways of funeral homes to search for illegal firearms and weapons?
