Food for thought from today's Times

Not mayor material

Gayle McLaughlin's statements at council meetings and in campaign brochures or newspaper articles reflect a very narrow approach to solving Richmond's major problems.

She says poor leadership by the mayor and City Council members is responsible for crime, violence, bad streets, and reduced economic opportunities or growth in Richmond. She believes these problems can be addressed through taxing businesses.

She also says she refuses to take funds from companies or to dialog with even the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, an organization largely comprised of small and medium businesses, nonprofit agencies and concerned individuals, fearing this might taint her.

An announced environmentalist and Green Party member, McLaughlin should examine the nationwide approach of an increasing number of environmental groups partnering with business and finding it's good for business and the environment.

One such group, the Business Environmental Leadership Council, was noted in a recent Times article.

For McLaughlin to promise to build a better Richmond by cutting dialog with businesses and other groups representing views different from her own sounds like Bush's approach to government: not talking with people having divergent points of view.

McLaughlin says she needs to learn more about Richmond's needs, and she's right, but not as Richmond's mayor.

The Business Environmental Leadership Council is a Pew Center front for Fortune 500 companies to offer hot air about pollution but not do anything about it. Dabney wants Gayle McLaughlin to make nice about environmental impact with some of the worst offenders? He doesn't know what he's talking about!

    Dear Clearly Troubled,

The BELC is a creation of the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, which is a nonprofit org of Pew Charitable Trusts. Notable local regional members include Bank of America, Boeing, CA Portland Cement, CH2M Hill, Georgia-Pacific, HP, Intel, Lockheed-Martin, PG&E, Toyota, United Tech, and Weyerhauser.

According to them, global warming is a fact that requires restrictions on fossil fuels, and that the Kyoto Protocols need to be implemented worldwide. We at the Tazer would've thought that environmentalists would agree with that sentiment. Perhaps it's because that message is coming from 41 F500 companies? Why that happens to erode their credibility in your mind puzzles us, especially since they ARE engaged in the debate. Gayle McLaughlin is staunchly against even dialogue, and cannot say the same, according to Bob Dabney.

We're sure Mr. Dabney could speak for himself, but we'll call your raise. Among other things he's arguably what we at the Tazer would call a business and civic leader, so we'll grant him some cred on the issue. Care to chime in on any of your achievements?

What have you done for me lately?

If the Tazer is truly fair and balanced it will print this letter from the Times!

    Don't be fooled

In response to Bob Dabney's letter (Times, Oct. 25), Gayle McLaughlin is indeed unlike her two Richmond mayoral opponents.

She refuses to take funds from corporations and is determined to remain independent from the oversized influence corporate giants exert on city decisions.

McLaughlin is good for Richmond's local businesses. She is the only City Council member who joined the Richmond Chamber of Commerce in opposing Measure Q, a new sales tax hike. While Mayor Irma Anderson supported the tax hike, voters agreed with McLaughlin and rejected Measure Q in November 2005.

McLaughlin realizes that when Richmond's crime epidemic has diminished, Richmond's businesses will prosper. Chevron, however, must pay its fair share to support crime prevention activities. Chevron made $45 billion in profits in the last three years; Richmond deserves to get a penny on the dollar.

Chevron is accustomed to buying Richmond officials' love and it doesn't know what to do with a stand-up, straight shooter they can't buy.

Voters will see many attacks on McLaughlin emerging directly from Chevron or its proxies. Don't be fooled. McLaughlin's backbone is good for Richmond and good for business.

    Dear T.J. Hooker,

First, we're not FoxNews. We don't need no stinking fair and balanced!

Second, never EVER tell us what to do. Ask next time, and nicely.

As for the letter by Juan Reardon, Green party associate of Gayle McLaughlin, he's naturally going to support his party mate. "Progressive" types have a tremendous tendency to view sales tax as "regressive"; i.e.: it's unfair to the poor. For most any politician, opposition to a sales tax increase is a populist stance.

At the same time, a tax increase on large businesses, especially petrochemical ones, is an expressly Green stance. Please note: "Richmond deserves to get a penny on the dollar." In short, profit isn't to be made by Chevron; it's to be collected by the government. The Tazer isn't saying that Chevron is peopled with saints, but for sure government isn't either. Ol' Granpappy Tazer, the cowboy, said it best: "Trust in God, but tie your horse."

If ever we'll agree with Mr. Reardon it's: "Don't be fooled." Carefully study all of your candidates and cast an informed vote. In fact, after reading the paper version of this letter to the editor, we chide the Times for not pointing out Mr. Reardon's political connection to Candidate McLaughlin.

TJ Hooker is nothing more than pandering and pimping the voters of this city with his dirty, raggedy politics.

I can't understand why McLaughlin and now Reardon are on Chevron's back! Chevron has done a lot for Richmond and they've done a lot for me and my coworkers and our families. What in the hell will those granola sprout eating environmentalist wackos replace our jobs and Chevron's tax revenues with, hemp farms and basketweaving classes!? Those "progressive types" you're talking about, Tazer, don't believe in entrepreneurship or making money. They only believe in collecting taxes for feelgood pet projects like that damn fool "Youth Corps" program Gayle keeps on touting. Heaven forbid she's ever mayor or Richmond would become a hellhole!
